Camden’s police and fire units are committed to providing public safety services through the implementation of innovative, directed and planned strategies for residents, businesses and visitors.
Launched on May 1, 2013, the Camden County Police Department is the primary law enforcement agency for the City of Camden. The department is dedicated to its mission of reducing the number of crime victims and making people feel safe, and the department strives to accomplish this through a commitment to community policing in every neighborhood. Our officers live and work by the credo: Service Before Self.
The Camden County Police Department implemented a now-national model of community policing. The Department is based on integrity, respect, compassion, accountability, service, and public trust. Innovative strategies, new technology and enhanced partnerships will remain the cornerstone of our never-ending pursuit of excellence.
Camden uses the Camden City Eyes in the Sky program. Through the use of mounted cameras, video monitors events on the streets in real times. The video images are transmitted on a video line to the police radio dispatch room that will be monitored 24 hours a day. Eyes in the Sky reduce public disorder and provide additional oversight of public spaces, streets and parks throughout the city.
Camden is a city of neighborhoods. Many of the universities are located in the heart of the bustling Camden Waterfront neighborhood, which attracts more than three million visitors every year to such attractions as the Susquehanna Bank Center, the Adventure Aquarium, and Campbell’s Field. If you’ve been to the Camden Waterfront, then you’ve been to Rutgers–Camden. The Rutgers police department works in close partnership with the Camden Police Department, the DRPA, and the security forces of our neighbors through the Camden Corporation Watch.
With Rutgers University –Camden, Rowan University at Camden and Camden County College located in the heart of Downtown Camden, their security teams play a vital role in patrolling the area. Rutgers also has over 221 cameras that deliver real-time laser feeds into the RUPD dispatcher, and 82 emergency phones across the campus connect directly to the RUPD. The Rutgers University Police Department patrols the campus and its neighborhood on foot, on bicycle, and in patrol cars 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The RUDP is trained alongside the same police officers who serve the city; our security guards are vigilant and a visible presence across our campus.
Camden’s Fire Department preserves and enhances the quality of life in the City of Camden through the effective prevention of fire and the efficient delivery of emergency services in the assigned mission areas of fire suppression, rescue services, emergency medical support, and the mitigation of special hazards that threaten public safety.
The Fire Department prevents fires and other hazards by raising awareness in the community, of the risks associated with fire and by educating the public to recognize unsafe practices and conditions.
